Safe in moderation
Can dogs eat shrimp? Yes, in moderation
Safe in small amounts. A few pieces of fully cooked, shelled, plain shrimp are fine; avoid raw, fried or breaded shrimp and shells.
If your dog ate a lot
- No need to worry if your dog ate a little plain cooked shrimp.
- If they ate shells or tails, watch for gagging, vomiting or not eating.
Don't
- Don't feed raw, fried or breaded shrimp.
- Don't leave on shells or tails.
How to give it safely
Cook fully (steamed is best), remove the shell, head, tail and legs, and give only a few small pieces now and then.
Why
Raw shellfish can carry harmful germs, and shells are a choking and blockage risk, especially for small dogs.
