Can dogs eat yogurt? Caution

Okay for some dogs. Small amounts of plain, unsweetened yogurt are fine for many dogs, but some can't digest lactose and some yogurts have xylitol.

What to do now

  1. Check the label for xylitol or other sweeteners.
  2. If it lists xylitol, call your vet or a pet poison line now.
  3. Otherwise, watch for gas, diarrhea or vomiting.

Don't

  • Don't give sweetened or sugar-free yogurt.

How to give it safely

Offer a small amount of plain, unsweetened yogurt, ideally Greek-style, which has less lactose. Start small and see how your dog does.

Signs to watch for

  • Gas
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

Why

Dogs don't digest lactose well after puppyhood, so yogurt can cause gas or diarrhea. Some sweetened yogurts contain xylitol, which is toxic.
