Can dogs eat almonds? Caution

Not recommended. Almonds aren't as toxic as some nuts, but they are hard for dogs to digest, high in fat, and can block the throat or gut.

What to do now

  1. Stay calm and watch your dog closely for vomiting, discomfort or trouble swallowing.
  2. Call your vet if your dog ate more than a few or shows signs of distress.
  3. Call your vet now if your dog is gagging, choking or struggling to breathe.

Don't

  • Don't give salted or seasoned almonds.

How to give it safely

Not recommended as a treat.

Signs to watch for

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Discomfort

Why

Dogs don't digest almonds well, their fat can trigger pancreatitis, and whole nuts can block the esophagus, intestines or windpipe, especially in small dogs. Salted or flavored almonds add more risk.
