Caution
Can dogs eat peanut butter? Caution
Safe only if xylitol-free. Most peanut butter is fine in moderation, but some brands contain xylitol, which can kill dogs. Check the label.
What to do now
- Check the label now for xylitol or birch sugar.
- If it lists xylitol or birch sugar, call your vet or a pet poison line now.
- If it is xylitol-free, no action is needed for a small amount.
Don't
- Don't give any peanut butter without reading the label first.
How to give it safely
Choose plain, unsalted peanut butter with no xylitol or birch sugar, and give small amounts as an occasional treat.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting
- Weakness
- Staggering
- Collapse
- Seizures
Why
Some peanut and nut butters are sweetened with xylitol, also called birch sugar, which can crash a dog's blood sugar. Peanut butter is also high in fat.
