Caution
Can dogs eat ice cream? Caution
Not recommended. Ice cream is high in sugar and fat and many dogs can't digest lactose; chocolate and sugar-free flavors can be toxic.
What to do now
- Check the flavor and label for chocolate, xylitol, raisins or nuts.
- If it had chocolate, xylitol, raisins or macadamia nuts, call your vet or a pet poison line now.
- Otherwise, watch for gas, diarrhea or vomiting over the next day.
Don't
- Don't share ice cream as a regular treat.
How to give it safely
Skip it. Frozen plain fat-free yogurt or frozen banana makes a better occasional treat.
Signs to watch for
- Gas
- Bloating
- Loose stool or diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Stomach pain
Why
Most adult dogs make little lactase, the enzyme that digests milk sugar, so dairy often causes stomach upset. Rich, high-fat dairy can also trigger pancreatitis.
