Safe in moderation
Can dogs eat pumpkin? Yes, in moderation
Safe. Plain cooked or canned pure pumpkin is a healthy, high-fiber treat; avoid pumpkin pie filling, which has sugar and spices.
If your dog ate a lot
- No need to worry if your dog ate plain pumpkin.
- If they ate pumpkin pie filling or pie, check the label for xylitol and call your vet if it's listed.
Don't
- Don't use pumpkin pie filling or pie mix.
How to give it safely
Use plain canned pumpkin puree with nothing added, or cooked plain pumpkin flesh, in small amounts.
Why
Pumpkin's fiber can help with mild diarrhea or constipation. Pumpkin pie mix can contain sugar, spices or xylitol, which can upset or poison a dog.
