Caution
Can dogs eat popcorn? Caution
Plain is okay. Air-popped popcorn with no butter or salt is a safe occasional treat, but buttered, salted or flavored popcorn is not.
What to do now
- Watch for vomiting, diarrhea or gagging.
- Call your vet if your dog ate a large bag of buttered or salted popcorn, or seems unwell.
Don't
- Don't share buttered, salted or flavored popcorn, or unpopped kernels.
How to give it safely
Offer a few pieces of plain, air-popped, fully popped popcorn as an occasional treat.
Signs to watch for
- Stomach upset
- Choking or gagging
- Kernels stuck in teeth
Why
Butter, oil and salt can cause stomach upset and add fat. Unpopped kernels can get stuck in teeth and are a choking hazard.
