Caution
Can dogs eat Brussels sprouts? Caution
Safe in small amounts. Cooked plain Brussels sprouts are nutritious but can give dogs a lot of gas and, in larger amounts, an upset stomach.
What to do now
- No need to worry if your dog ate a few plain sprouts.
- Expect some gas, and watch for diarrhea if they ate a lot.
Don't
- Don't serve them raw or with herbs and spices.
How to give it safely
Cook until soft (steaming keeps the most nutrients), trim most of the stem, and start with a small piece.
Signs to watch for
- Gas
- Stomach upset
- Diarrhea
Why
Brussels sprouts contain isothiocyanate, which speeds up the gut and causes gas. The gas is unpleasant but not harmful.
