Can dogs eat spinach? Caution

Caution. A little plain spinach is usually fine for healthy dogs, but its oxalic acid can strain the kidneys in larger amounts.

What to do now

  1. No need to panic over a small amount of plain spinach.
  2. Call your vet if your dog ate a large amount or has a history of kidney or bladder stones.

Don't

  • Don't feed spinach to dogs prone to kidney or bladder stones.
  • Don't serve creamed or seasoned spinach.

How to give it safely

Steam it, chop it finely, and serve plain in small amounts only now and then. Check with your vet first.

Why

Spinach is high in oxalic acid, which blocks calcium absorption and can damage the kidneys in large amounts. Dogs prone to kidney or bladder stones should avoid it.
