Caution
Salt water (sea water) and dogs: what to do
Caution. A few gulps of sea water often cause only diarrhea, but drinking a lot can raise salt levels and cause tremors and seizures.
What to do now
- Move your dog away from the sea and give fresh water and shade.
- Rinse salt off your dog's fur with fresh water.
- Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, wobbliness or tiredness.
- Call your vet if any signs appear, even diarrhea.
- Get to a vet quickly if your dog trembles, seems confused or has a seizure.
Don't
- Don't use salt or salt water to make a dog vomit.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Weakness or low energy
- Confusion or stumbling
- Muscle tremors
- Seizures
When signs appear: Vomiting usually within a few hours
Why
Too much salt raises the sodium level in the body, which can make a dog confused, weak or unresponsive.
