Caution
Can dogs eat honey? Caution
Safe in small amounts for healthy adult dogs. Honey is high in sugar, and raw honey isn't for puppies or dogs with weak immune systems.
What to do now
- No need to worry if your healthy adult dog licked a little honey.
- Call your vet for advice if a puppy, a diabetic dog or a dog with a weak immune system ate honey.
Don't
- Don't give honey to diabetic dogs.
- Don't give raw honey to puppies or dogs with weak immune systems.
How to give it safely
Ask your vet how much is right; a small taste now and then is plenty. Brushing teeth afterward helps.
Why
Honey's sugar can lead to weight gain and tooth decay, and it shouldn't be given to diabetic dogs. Raw honey may carry botulism spores.
