Caution
Can dogs eat ham? Caution
Not advisable. Ham is very salty and fatty, and too much can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst or pancreatitis.
What to do now
- Make sure your dog has fresh water.
- Watch for vomiting, diarrhea or extreme thirst over the next day or two.
- Call your vet if your dog ate a lot or seems unwell.
Don't
- Don't give ham bones.
How to give it safely
Best avoided. A small sliver of lean ham as a rare treat is the most to offer.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Excessive thirst
- Excessive urination
Why
Ham's salt and sodium-based nitrate preservatives load a dog with sodium, and its fat can trigger pancreatitis. A small sliver now and then probably won't hurt.
