First aid
Broken bone or limping after an injury: dog first aid
Use this when your dog is suddenly limping, won't put weight on a leg, or a leg looks swollen after a fall or accident.
Get your dog to a vet as soon as you can
Find an emergency vetWhat to do
- Approach slowly and gently. A dog in pain may bite, so use a muzzle or towel if needed.
- Check for other injuries. Cover wounds with a clean cloth and press lightly on any bleeding.
- Don't let your dog walk on the leg. Support it so it doesn't put weight on it.
- Keep your dog still, for example in a crate, while you call the vet.
- If your dog can't walk, move it on a flat board or firm blanket.
- Call your vet for an emergency appointment.
Don't
- Don't try to splint or bandage the leg unless your vet tells you to.
- Don't touch or move the painful area.
- Don't give food, water or human painkillers before you speak to your vet.
Signs
- Limping or not putting weight on a leg
- Swelling
- Whining or crying in pain
- Unable to stand or walk
Why
Broken bones are extremely painful and need a vet. Moving the hurt leg or letting the dog walk on it can make the injury worse.
