Caution
Can dogs eat spicy food? Caution
Not recommended. Spicy food may not be toxic, but it is almost certain to upset a dog's stomach, so keep hot peppers and sauces away.
What to do now
- Remove the rest of the food and check it for onion, garlic or bones.
- Watch for vomiting or diarrhea over the next day.
- Call your vet if the food had onion, garlic or bones, or your dog keeps vomiting.
Don't
- Don't give hot peppers such as jalapenos or chili peppers.
How to give it safely
Skip it. Plain, seeded sweet bell pepper is a safer choice.
Signs to watch for
- Stomach upset
Why
Hot peppers and spicy dishes irritate a dog's stomach, and spicy, fatty foods can also lead to pancreatitis. Check spicy dishes for onion, garlic or bones, which are more dangerous than the heat.
