Caution
Dog ate silica gel packets? What to do
Silica gel packets are not really poisonous, but they can upset a dog's stomach, and a large packet could cause a blockage.
What to do now
- Check the packet. White or clear beads are silica gel and can be watched at home.
- If the contents are dark, hold a magnet over them. If they stick, it may be iron: call your vet or a pet poison line now.
- Call your vet if your dog keeps vomiting or swallowed a large packet.
Don't
- Don't make your dog vomit unless a vet tells you to.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Stomach upset
Why
Silica gel is a drying agent and is not toxic. But similar-looking packets in food can hold iron oxygen absorbers, which are dangerous.
