Mildly toxic. Holly leaves and berries usually cause only stomach upset such as vomiting and diarrhea, and most dogs recover at home.
What to do now
- Take away any holly and rinse your dog's mouth with water.
- Watch for vomiting, diarrhea or belly pain.
- Call your vet if signs are severe, don't stop, or your dog seems dehydrated.
Don't
- Don't make your dog vomit unless a vet tells you to.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Belly pain
- Low energy (depression)
Why
Holly contains saponins, irritating substances in the plant. The leaves and berries are low in toxicity.
