Caution
Is frangipani (kemboja) toxic to dogs?
Mildly toxic. Chewing frangipani (kemboja) leaves, stems or flowers can cause drooling, vomiting and diarrhea. Serious illness is rare.
What to do now
- Take any plant pieces away and rinse your dog's mouth with water.
- Wash sap off the skin and fur with mild soap and water.
- Watch for drooling, vomiting or diarrhea over the next day.
- Call your vet if vomiting or diarrhea keeps going, your dog won't eat, or seems weak or unwell, especially a small puppy.
Don't
- Don't make your dog vomit unless a vet tells you to.
- Don't let a puppy chew fallen branches or flowers; the sap is the irritating part.
Signs to watch for
- Drooling
- Pawing at the mouth
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Not eating
Why
The milky sap irritates the mouth and skin, and the plant contains compounds that upset the stomach and gut. The veterinary plant guide notes that severe signs are rare and animals usually recover quickly without treatment.
