Can dogs eat coconut? Caution

Safe in moderation. Small pieces of coconut flesh are fine, but it is high in fat and can cause diarrhea, and the shell and husk are dangerous.

What to do now

  1. No need to worry if your dog ate a little coconut flesh.
  2. Watch for loose stool or diarrhea.
  3. If your dog swallowed shell or husk pieces, watch for vomiting or not eating, and call your vet if it happens.

Don't

  • Don't give coconut shell or husk.
  • Don't use coconut water in place of drinking water.

How to give it safely

Offer small pieces of fresh coconut flesh now and then. Ask your vet first if your dog has had pancreatitis.

Signs to watch for

  • Diarrhea
  • Loose stool
  • Stomach upset

Why

Coconut is high in fat, so it can upset the stomach and isn't a good choice for overweight dogs or dogs that have had pancreatitis. Shells and husks can cause blockages.
