Caution
Can dogs eat broccoli? Caution
Safe in small amounts. Plain broccoli is a healthy treat, but the florets can irritate a dog's stomach and stalks can be a choking risk.
What to do now
- Watch for stomach upset or vomiting over the next day.
- Call your vet if vomiting continues or your dog is gagging or struggling to swallow.
Don't
- Don't add seasonings, butter or oils.
- Don't give large stalks to small dogs.
How to give it safely
Offer a very small amount, plain, raw or cooked, cut into bite-sized pieces. Start with a tiny piece to see how your dog reacts.
Signs to watch for
- Stomach irritation
- Gagging or choking
Why
Broccoli florets contain isothiocyanates, which can cause mild to potentially severe stomach irritation in some dogs. Stalks can block the esophagus, especially in small dogs.
