Can dogs eat bread? Caution

Plain bread is okay in small amounts but adds only empty calories. Avoid raw dough and breads with raisins, garlic, nuts or xylitol.

What to do now

  1. No need to worry if your dog ate a little plain bread.
  2. If the bread had raisins, garlic, chocolate, nuts or xylitol, call your vet or a pet poison line now.
  3. If your dog ate raw dough, call your vet now.

Don't

  • Don't give raw yeast dough.

How to give it safely

Offer only very small pieces of plain bread as an occasional treat.

Why

Plain white or wheat bread is generally safe if your dog has no wheat allergy. Some breads contain toxic ingredients like raisins, garlic, macadamia nuts or xylitol.
